Pretoria is a city located in the northern part of Gauteng province, in South Africa, within the Metropolitan Municipality of Tshwane. It serves as the administrative capital of South Africa, situated near the legislative city of Cape Town and the judicial city of Bloemfontein. The Executive Power is based in Pretoria. The metropolitan area of Pretoria is the fifth most significant in South Africa, with an estimated population of 2,985,997. Pretoria is recognized as the city that provides the most services at the national level in university education, with institutions such as the University of Pretoria, established in 1908 and one of the oldest and largest in the public sector, the University of South Africa, which is the first in the country to offer distance learning qualifications, and Tshwane's Technological University, which enrolls the highest number of science students in South Africa. It is also the headquarters of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research of South Africa. Pretoria is also popularly known in Africa as "The Jacaranda City" due to the abundance of Jacaranda trees lining its streets, parks, and gardens.
