Areatza Spain

The municipality of Areatza is located within the historical territory of Bizkaia, within the Arratia-Nervión valley, and is surrounded by Mount Gorbeia (1,481 m), the highest mountain in Bizkaia. The characteristics of its old town will allow us to take a short tour of its narrow and cobbled streets, and thus appreciate the unique houses of the municipality that maintain all the typical Basque flavor. In addition, this Biscayan town has an architectural heritage of great interest, declared a "monumental complex" by the Basque Government. On the right bank of the Arratia river and opposite the Zubizarra bridge, is the Santa Isabel convent. We will also visit the church of San Bartolomé, a discreet construction completed in the 19th century. From there, we will soon reach the most notable buildings, which are grouped around the town hall square: the Gortazar palace, the Riscal palace and the town hall itself, in neoclassical style. Areatza, located in a spectacular setting at the foot of Gorbeia, is the starting point for many mountain excursions. The Gorbeia Natural Park is considered one of the most beautiful areas of the Basque Autonomous Community for being an area of incalculable landscape, cultural and natural value.
